The pre-K year is mostly about the habits kindergarten assumes a child already has: listening in a group, finishing something once it is started, managing a coat and a lunch box, and asking for help out loud. The academic pieces come along with those, through name writing, letter sounds, counting, patterns, and the first real practice with scissors and a pencil.
We keep the pace honest. A child who is not ready for the next step does not get pushed past it, and a child who is ahead gets harder work instead of more of the same. Before kindergarten starts we talk through where your child stands and what would help over the summer, in plain language, so nothing about the first day of school arrives as a surprise.
